Douglas M. DeGrave is a founding partner of Poliquin & DeGrave LLP. He has been in practice for nearly thirty years. Prior to forming his own firm, Mr. DeGrave was the managing partner in the Orange County office of a large Southern California insurance defense firm where he worked for eighteen years. Mr. DeGrave received an AV rating from Martindale-Hubbell, which he has held since 1995.
Mr. DeGrave was born on May 23, 1954 in Rochester, New York. He earned an undergraduate degree from the University of Hawaii while serving in the United States Army. After his military service, Mr. DeGrave attended California State University at Long Beach, graduating in 1978 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science. He attended Loyola Law School in Los Angeles and received his Juris Doctor in 1981.
Mr. DeGrave is a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA). In 2008, he served as president of the Orange County Chapter. Currently, Mr. DeGrave is President-Elect of Cal-ABOTA and serves on the national board of directors. He is a member of the National Board of Trial Advocates and is one of only 100 lawyers certified as a civil trial specialist in California. He is also a member of the Association of Southern California Defense Counsel, Defense Research Institute and the Orange County Bar Association.
From 2007 - 2012 L.A. Magazine named Mr. DeGrave as one of Southern California’s Top Lawyers. In 2010, Orange Coast Magazine named Mr. DeGrave one of the Top Attorneys in Orange County. In 2007, Mr. DeGrave became a fellow of the Litigation Counsel of America. In November 2011, Mr. DeGrave was named Orange County Trial Lawyer of the Year by the Orange County American Board of Trial Advocates.
Mr. DeGrave specializes in civil litigation, including construction accident and defect, personal injury, insurance defense, uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage, premises liability, product liability, and governmental tort claims. He serves as an arbitrator and mediator, privately and for the courts. Mr. DeGrave is a frequent lecturer on insurance coverage, bad faith, trial practice and ethics. He is also a former adjunct professor at Western State University College of Law.
